The CPMC Health Equity Working Group explores systemic barriers to biomarker and genetic testing for underserved populations. We are committed to sharing effective models and collaborating with the healthcare community to improve equitable access to precision medicine.
Expert Insights
What We’ve Learned
Through surveys and expert interviews, we heard directly from clinicians, researchers, industry, and advocacy leaders about the most pressing barriers to equitable biomarker and genetic testing. Key findings included provider bias, rigid testing processes, insurance gaps, and political instability. Suggested solutions emphasized patient navigation, community-based advocacy, and universal testing models.
Case Studies
Models of Success
To showcase solutions, we highlighted six organizations that are advancing access through innovative approaches. We used the “Right Track” framework (originally developed in 2018 by PanCAN, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance (MBCA), and LUNGevity Foundation) to organize these examples. While not originally designed for health equity, the framework helps demonstrate how real-world initiatives align with getting patients the right team, the right test, at the right time, and the right treatment.
- Right Team – Multidisciplinary experts tailored to the patient’s disease
- Right Test – Accurate, timely diagnostics to guide decisions
- Right Time – Rapid initiation of testing and treatment
- Right Treatment – Personalized therapy based on patient needs

Call to Collaboration
Improving equity in precision medicine requires collaboration across patients, providers, payers, researchers, and policymakers. The CPMC Health Equity Working Group will continue to share models, resources, and insights to address systemic gaps in care, and we welcome engagement from across the healthcare community.
